older (pre-2.6) Intel chipsets.
Note that the drivers are Intel drivers; they are not supported
by the Linux kernel, and you should not attempt to compile
them yourself.

These Intel chipsets (together with chipsets using other
chipsets such as the Marvell Kirkwood) were still fairly
common on PCs from 2002 to 2006. Some people want to take
advantage of the faster Intel chipsets in laptops from
this era, so these chipsets may be installed in the year
2008 laptop without problems. However, your motherboard
might not be supported by the distribution you are using,
so unless the vendor of your laptop is providing Linux
drivers, you are not going to be able to use these chipsets.

Please note that these (firmware-based) drivers are *not*
included in the Linux kernel; they only provide a graphical
User Interface to update the boot time configuration of
Intel chipsets, not to make them work. In addition, the
kernel does not know anything about them, and it is not
possible to load the drivers at boot time. The only way to
make these drivers work is to load them manually from
scripts during boot time.

Most of the older Intel chipsets have a fairly standard
firmware base-code – the firmware needs to know a few
things about the chipset in order to work – such as the
chipset name, the number of video-channels (the graphic
card usually has two video-channels, which are assigned
to Primary-Color & Main-Color), and which color-depth is
available (possible depths are: 256, 320, 352, 384 and
512 colors, and you need to choose one). The firmware
then loads a chipset-specific, precompiled, binary driver
from a directory in the file system. This driver is usually
placed in the «/lib/firmware» directory inside the firmware
directory of the chipset. The firmware and driver must be
loaded and unloaded manually. The folder of the Linux
driver/firmware is usually «/lib/firmware/intel/vxe» or
«/lib/firmware/intel/ville» – this is the same directory
where the PC-BIOS would normally store the firmware for
these chipsets – which means
